What is Vote4Peace?
Vote4Peace is an independent non-party campaign for the British general election in 2005. Its aim is to help elect a group of 40 MPs
from mainstream parties who are anti-war and pro-peace and legitimacy. We are supporting candidates who have a realistic chance of
winning in close marginal seats where a few votes can make the difference.
The background to the campaign is the frustration that many people felt over the war in Iraq. Our voices were ignored. Despite widespread
anger our country was led into a war of choice without international legitimacy. Invasion led to occupation, occupation to insurgency,
and tens of thousands of innocents have died along the way.
A few MPs could hold the balance of power in the next Parliament. We need to make sure we build a parliamentary majority for peace and
legitimacy, and against Bush’s wars. No More Iraqs.
Who is Vote4Peace supporting? From which parties?
Vote4Peace is supporting MPs who voted against the Iraq war and who are committed to peace & legitimacy, and new candidates who share
these principles. We are supporting candidates from the Labour backbenches, the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and the Scottish National
Party.
We are focused on marginal constituencies where a few votes can make the difference. We’re only supporting candidates who can win.
We’re dealing with politicians here, not saints. But the candidates we’ve chosen offer the best prospect of building a parliamentary
majority for peace.
How does Vote4Peace work?
We are supporting candidates in three ways:
- Giving donations to help support their campaigns
- Organising volunteer support for them, from letter-writing
and phone canvassing to leafleting and campaigning - Supporting them in the national and local media
You can help by donating to the campaign now (100% of your donation will go to candidates), or by signing up to get involved. If you
only want to support Vote4Peace candidates from one particular party, that’s possible too.
Why work in marginal seats only?
Because that’s where we can make the most difference!
Who is my nearest Vote4Peace candidate?
You can go to our candidates page to see who we’re supporting in your local region. When you sign up with your postcode, we’ll tell
you if you’re in one of our target constituencies. If you aren’t, we’ll tell you which are the nearest constituencies where your help
could make a difference.
How can I help?
There are two main ways you can help. First, if you are on the electoral roll somewhere in the UK, you can give a donation to help our
candidates. Click here to give as much or as little as you like.
Secondly, you can sign up to get involved and support one of our candidates or the Vote4Peace campaign as a whole. We are preparing a
volunteer pack for when the election is called, but canvassing has already started. Click here if you want to get involved now. We’re
working directly with our candidates to find our what support they need. There are many ways in which you could help:
- writing letters to the media
- doorstep or town-centre campaigning
- telephone canvassing
- delivering leaflets
- preparing mail outs
- helping with administration in constituency offices, or remotely if it’s not possible for you to go to the constituency office itself.
- Why does this matter now? Isn’t Iraq a free and democratic country?
- Why not support all anti-war, pro-peace candidates?
- I’m an anti-war candidate. Why am I not on your list?
- Are you an anti-Labour / anti-Tory / Liberal Democrat front?
- Why are you supporting a few MPs who abstained on Division 118?
- Won’t you let the Tories in by the back door?
- Where does the money come from?
